Martyn - grants for teachers

Martyn's story

Primary school teacher Martyn was in his eighteenth year of teaching when he found himself in need of help from our grants service.

"In November 2018 I secured a part-time maternity cover contract for a year at a primary school in North Yorkshire to start in February 2019. Unfortunately, at the end of January 2019 I sustained a dislocated shoulder whilst playing rugby and had to be rushed to A&E, resulting in a major reconstructive shoulder operation. Following the operation I was signed off for a month and was pretty much house-bound.

"Since I sustained the injury before I started work at the school, I didn’t qualify for sick pay and had little in the way of savings to support my little boy and pay my mortgage and other bills.

"This was when I got in touch with Education Support and, following some paperwork, I was thrilled to hear that Education Support would pay my mortgage that month and they also gave me an additional grant to cover bills and other expenses, which was a lifesaver!

"I was eventually able to start work at the school in April 2019, however I had continuous physio and hydrotherapy sessions until August 2019.

"My treatment and the many follow-up appointments have now finished and I am fully recovered. It was a very difficult few months, but without the support I received from Education Support I would have been in a much worse place."
