As an academic break approaches, you might be thinking about how best to use the time to rest and recharge after the demands of the academic year.
For some, rest might mean escaping with a good book, catching up on sleep, or spending time with loved ones. For others, it could involve creative pursuits, quiet reflection, or simply stepping away from screens. Rest looks different for everyone.
Researcher and author Dr Sandra Daulton-Smith believes there are 7 different types of rest, which all serve a unique purpose.
Here are seven types of rest:

Physical
Listening to what your body needs whether that be exercise, sleep or yoga/breathing.

Mental
Anything that gives your brain a break from thinking and focusing too hard.

Sensory
Taking some time to unplug from all of external stimuli and give your senses a break.

Emotional
Processing emotions and feeling like you can share them with those around you or a therapist.

Social
Spending time with the friends and family that bring out the best in you and don’t drain you.
6
Creative
Anything that helps you to feel inspired, a creative hobby, listening to music or being around nature
7
Spiritual
Activities that provide meaning such as volunteering, spiritual practice, community involvement.
