Teacher Peloton: connecting through cycling

8th June 2021

Dan, James and Kieran met when studying teaching. They discovered a mutual love for cycling and founded the Teacher Peloton Cycling Community to help feel more connected during lockdown.

Teachers and education staff can feel stressed and isolated at the best of times. During the pandemic we felt more isolated and needed to feel part of a bigger community.

So we set up a remote cycling club and community for teachers, called Teacher Peloton. This gave us a way to share our interest in cycling and talk about the day-to-day issues of teaching life during lockdown. It has become a great way to feel more connected and less stressed.

We now have 2k followers on social media and have made some great friends from across the UK, into Europe and beyond. Now lockdown has eased, the community is meeting up in real life up and down the country.

Our friend, who is a cyclist and teacher, was knocked off his bike and badly injured and it really hit us hard. He was injured to such a degree that he may never ride again. Fortunately, he was able to access support to help him get through the dark days.

This is why we got in touch with Education Support to see how Teacher Peloton could help raise awareness and funds for mental health support for teachers and education staff.

The Teacher Peloton founders are planning a night ride on 26th June, from dusk until dawn, leaving from Haverhill, Suffolk and riding to the most easterly point in the UK in Lowestoft. It will be an epic challenge and certainly a tough one! If you’d like to support us please donate via our JustGiving page

We are also opening the challenge up to our members and the wider education community by organising a week-long event from 21st-27th June. The challenge is to cycle 100 miles on a day of your choice, across the week, or as a team relay – it’s flexible! Please join our challenge by sharing on social media (by tagging @teacherpeloton and @edsupportuk) and linking to our JustGiving page.

Get involved by sharing with your colleagues, students and parents in your school. You can find out more about the Teacher Peloton community by following us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or join our remote cycling via Zwift or our Strava club.
